Steam engine ride on the Train a Vapeur des Cévennes

Take the museum steam train from Anduze to Saint Jean du Gard and get inspired on a trip across viaducts through the Gardon, along a beautiful landscape.

The name Train a Vapeur des Cévennes (TVC) is the name for the "Steam-Train-the-Cevennes" which runs almost every day between Anduze and St Jean du Gard. (At least in the holiday season).

Around 1880, the railway line was integrated into the rail network Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean, with a connection to Ales-Anduze. However, according to St. Jean du Gard it was around 1906. Already 40 years later, the people transport stopped, and from the 70s on, the train was only used for carrying cargo anymore.

However, because of the rising tourism around Anduze things changed again in 1986 and the railway was opened for people transport once again. A ride on the original steam locomotive and the historic carriages is a great experience, especially because the track crosses 5 viaducts, and runs through 4 tunnels (up to 830 meters in length), past several old railway stations.

From the train, you can enjoy the magnificent view over the Gardon, where you can see bathers and sunbakers alike waving to the train. The journey takes about 40 minutes. If you to visit the Bambouseraie you have the option to get off the train here or continue to St. Jean du Gard. Every week on a Tuesday there is a market on the St.Jean du Gard, which is a definite must see.

The ideal combination is to start early in the morning, taking the train from Anduze to St.Jean du Gard. Then spend 2 hours on the market in St.Jean du Gard, or alternatively, visit one of the cafes. Then at noon, you can take the train back to Anduze. This still gives you plenty of time to visit the Bambouseraie. You need to get off the train at the Bambouseraie train station, 2km before Anduze.

If you happen to stay in one of the campsites in the north of Anduze, you can easily walk back on foot and if necessary, end your trip with a short river crossing.

This trip is for children and adults alike a great experience, mainly because there is so much to see and to photograph. The carriage directly behind the steam engine offers an excellent view of the train driver, but is also, one of the “sootiest” places when the train goes through the tunnel.
